The Cultural Learning Field (CAC) Sowing Hope and the Environmental Management System (SGA) of the Ubaté branch carried out the construction of a vertical garden thanks to the joint work of all the administrative staff who committed to taking care of it.
The wall was built with the stated objective of promoting initiatives that are alternatives to high-cost systems for food availability and food security through the installation of eco-walls, with recycled material, that optimize the use of rainwater with home gardens and vertical gardens to reduce water demand and increase food availability.
“Sustainable development and harmony with nature are a reality at the Ubaté branch. The staff were very motivated and each adopted a plant for its care. We are all committed because, in addition to looking beautiful at the branch, we have plants that can be consumed,” explained Dr. Alejandro Flechas, Administrative Director of the Ubaté branch.
For this purpose, 40 three-liter PET plastic bottles were reused, which each official donated, marked with their name, and planted a seedling in. Among the species of aromatic seedlings were: lemon balm, spearmint, basil, and oregano. These species were chosen because of the benefits their consumption brings to humans, as they help maintain good health and prevent problems such as diabetes, hypertension, among others.
Likewise, aromatic plants contribute to environmental conservation and protection by encouraging the presence of pollinating insects in cities and gardens, and cultivating them for consumption reduces the carbon footprint. It is also worth noting that this type of activity extends the lifespan of plastic bottles, which have a significant environmental impact if not disposed of properly.
To publicize the activity, a 'live' broadcast was held on Facebook, which can be viewed at the following link: https://www.facebook.com/UcundinamarcaSeccionalUbate/videos/577080186697795 In it, not only was the final result of this day shown, but a step-by-step guide to its preparation can also be found so that the information reaches more people and they are encouraged to replicate the activity in each of their homes, since it is very easy and accessible for everyone.
