The Fulbright Commission in Colombia has launched its first call for applications in 2021, seeking candidates from all regions of the country. This call will be open until May 14th, allowing Colombian professionals to apply for Fulbright scholarships for master's and doctoral studies at U.S. universities.

Those selected candidates, distinguished by their high social commitment to our country, outstanding for exercising leadership and impact in their communities and regions, first generation students, those with academic and professional trajectory of excellence and those who come from various regions of Colombia, will begin their studies from the second semester of 2022.

“Despite the challenges brought on by the pandemic, the Fulbright Commission in Colombia and its partners—the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, the Ministry of National Education, USAID, and the Saldarriaga Concha Foundation—remain committed to providing high-level educational opportunities for Colombians. We seek diverse candidates in terms of their places of origin, income, ethnicity, and population groups. We want more candidates who were the first in their families to attend university,” said Diana Basto Castro, Executive Director of Fulbright Colombia.

A more diverse and inclusive scholarship portfolio

This 2021 portfolio includes two scholarship programs for individuals from Afro-descendant and Indigenous communities, and one program for people with disabilities. We will also have the J. William Fulbright Scholarships, which, after several years of not being part of the graduate program options, are returning to this portfolio to reduce barriers to accessing high-quality higher education.

Thus, the scholarship portfolio consists of a total of five (5) programs for master's and doctoral studies in the United States of America:

Fulbright MinCiencias Scholarship: Thanks to the co-financing of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation of Colombia – Minciencias and with more than 25 years in the Fulbright scholarship portfolio, this program supports the high-level training of up to forty (40) Colombian professionals and researchers who wish to pursue doctoral programs in the United States, starting in the second semester of 2022.

Fulbright Scholarship for Afro-descendant Communities: co-financed for more than 12 years by the Ministry of National Education and USAID Colombia, this scholarship aimed at Afro, Raizal and Palenquero communities, supports the high-level training of up to three (3) Colombian professionals belonging to these communities, to carry out master's or doctoral programs in universities in the United States.

Fulbright Scholarship for Indigenous Communities: supports the advanced training of one (1) Colombian professional from an indigenous community who wishes to pursue a master's or doctoral degree. This scholarship has been part of the Fulbright portfolio for four years and is co-funded by USAID Colombia.

Fulbright Saldarriaga Concha Scholarship: Thanks to the co-financing of the Saldarriaga Concha Foundation, this year the program returns to the portfolio, open to all areas of knowledge and aimed at Colombian professionals with physical, intellectual, sensory or multiple disabilities, of any degree, who wish to pursue a master's degree in the USA.

J. William Fulbright Scholarship: five scholarships created and funded by the Fulbright Program. Interested candidates can apply to master's degree programs at universities in the United States.

To apply, interested candidates should carefully review the terms of reference for each scholarship program, which are available on the website www.fulbright.edu.co/posgrados

The Fulbright Graduate Scholarship portfolio has enabled more than 3,000 Colombians to have trained or are training in high-quality graduate programs at universities in the United States.

It has also enabled the creation of international academic and research networks and has fostered academic internationalization in Colombia, as well as supported the National Doctoral Training Program in Colombia.
