The University of Cundinamarca (UCundinamarca) signed an inter-administrative agreement to provide students with internet access, thereby facilitating technology-supported learning. The Mobile Connectivity socioeconomic program, led by the Office of Student Welfare, explained that a total of 916 students are benefiting from this program.
“In the Chía Extension there are 95, Facatativá 195, Soacha 147, Zipaquirá 33, Girardot Branch 120, Ubaté Branch 121 and in the Fusagasugá headquarters 205, for a total of 916 students who applied to the call and today have this benefit, from now until the end of the semester,” explained Paola Andrea Méndez Sánchez, psychologist of the University Welfare office.
In a live session broadcast on the UCundinamarca Facebook page, University Welfare invited a representative from the operator that currently provides the service, who told us about the benefits and advantages for students of having mobile connectivity.
“Apps like Teams, email, and WhatsApp are free on this plan, and therefore don't use up any of the 20 gigabytes of data included in the monthly allowance,” explained Franklin Camacho, a guest expert from Tigo-Une, the service provider. He also emphasized the importance of the fact that, even after using up their data allowance, students can continue browsing, albeit not at the same speed, but with connectivity.
The guest stated that 4G technology is so advanced that this type of access is practically the same as what you have at home with home internet providers; in addition, students will be able to share internet from their cell phone to their computer and thus optimize their searches.
On the other hand, he recalled the importance of the responsible use of social networks and the pages that are visited, even though at the request of UCundinamarca some pages with adult content were blocked.
“According to our calculations, students will have data for 22 days during the month, corresponding to the days they have academic activities. This indicates that they will always have connectivity,” Camacho said.
These plans will be active until the end of the 2021 IPA semester, and the SIM cards will remain as prepaid in case anyone is interested in topping them up afterward. Some SIM cards have already been delivered, and the remaining ones are due to logistical issues; however, the goal is for all beneficiaries to receive their SIM cards as soon as possible.
For support issues, Franklin assured that there are two options: call the line 01 8000 513 287, or from a cell phone dial #513 number 5, when they request a code it is: 6862. There they will be able to provide the respective technical service.
“The idea is for students to use this plan for studying; some have Tigo SIM cards and others Claro SIM cards due to coverage issues, but the plan is practically the same,” the expert concluded.
