XII Equine Festival at UCundinamarca

On November 3, the Cultural Learning Field: Territory of Knowledge of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences held the inauguration of the XII Equine Festival and the Equine Congress, an academic space whose purpose is to measure the importance of the equine in the history of humanity, in the development of the country and in the development of the territories.

It is worth noting that the Equine Cultural Parade took place on October 28 as a prelude to the equine exhibition that will be held on November 4 at the Fusagasugá venue.

The opening ceremony was attended by the Secretary General of the University of Cundinamarca, Dr. Isabel Quintero Uribe, who emphasized the importance of this initiative in connecting academia with the agricultural sector. For his part, the Dean of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, John Alexander Moreno Sandoval, explained that through the study of horses, “we can learn many aspects related to animal welfare, nutrition, reproduction, and all the disciplinary areas of animal husbandry,” he stated.

It should be noted that experts such as Santiago Cuartas Uribe, a veterinary doctor specializing in animal husbandry and a professor at the University of Caldas; Dr. Andrés Gil, a zootechnician and professor of ethology at the Santa Rosa de Cabal University Corporation; and Dr. Nicole Manrique, a zootechnician from the University of Cundinamarca and a specialist in equine nutrition, also participated in the inauguration.

Topics covered included: promoting equine welfare, behavioral motivation, strategies to prevent emotional harm to horses, treating behavioral problems in horses, and cognition and learning. The clinical consequences of inadequate animal husbandry practices and how to prevent equine diseases and injuries due to poor practices were also discussed. Finally, proper nutrition, preventing malnutrition or overfeeding, and appropriate nutritional supplementation were addressed.

This academic space was enriching for the attending students, who participated enthusiastically with their questions and opinions during the experts' presentations.
