Promoting environmental culture

By: Alejandro García Suárez – Advisory Office of Communications

The Environmental Management System (EMS) of the University of Cundinamarca participated in the inauguration of the “Legado” Project, an initiative led by the Leonardo Hoyos Aqueduct in the El Placer rural district of Fusagasugá, which seeks to strengthen environmental culture and the care of water resources in the community.

The participation of the Environmental Management System (SGA) reaffirms the institutional commitment to sustainability and environmental education by supporting spaces that promote the social appropriation of knowledge and joint work with communities.

According to Rosa María Arias Roldán, coordinator of the SGA, this project is established as an open setting for training and learning, especially aimed at children and youth. Through workshops, pedagogical meetings, and practical activities, topics such as the water cycle, its conservation, responsible use, and sustainable land management will be addressed.

“The Environmental Management System supports this type of initiative, which not only educates but also generates a collective awareness of water as a vital resource for life,” he highlighted.

The event featured the participation of educational institutions, environmental authorities, and local entities, including the Nuevo Horizonte School, CAR, and Emserfusa, demonstrating the importance of coordinated work for the building of sustainable territories.

A mural that educates and connects

As a central part of the experience, an interactive mural symbolizing the essence of the Legacy Project was presented. This artistic and pedagogical work conveys messages of identity, memory, sustainability, and commitment, highlighting the role of children and youth as guardians of water.

The mural incorporates elements that represent the biodiversity of Fusagasugá, the history of water in the region, and the relationship among the mineral, plant, and animal components, promoting a comprehensive vision of environmental care.

In addition, it includes symbolic characters like EPI, inspired by the orchid Epidendrum fusagasugense, and LEO, which represents the community aqueduct's commitment to the protection of natural resources.

Learn from experience

During the inauguration, held last March 20, future activities were shared, such as pedagogical gatherings in the Batán River basin, bird-watching outings, and environmental awareness experiences, which will help strengthen the bond between the community and its natural environment.

The Legacy Project is envisioned as an initiative that transcends education by integrating art, knowledge, and community participation to promote water conservation and the building of a sustainable future.

With your participation, the UCundinamarca Environmental Management System continues to contribute to the development of responsible territories, where environmental awareness becomes an engine for social transformation.
