Ethics Committee
ACADEMIC COUNCIL APPROVED COMMITTEE ON ETHICS, BIOETHICS AND RESEARCH INTEGRITY
The Academic Council, through Agreement 019 of 2021, created the Committee for Ethics, Bioethics, and Research Integrity – CEBII of the University of Cundinamarca as an advisory body, responsible for issuing opinions in decision-making regarding the ethical, bioethical, and integrity aspects of research projects and undergraduate thesis work by student research seedbeds; it shall be attached to the Directorate of Research and shall ensure compliance with applicable regulations from the ethical dimension in the planning and development of research projects and seedbed work guided by professor-researchers carried out in the different academic units of the University, in order to guarantee respect for the dignity and protection of the rights of individuals and other living beings involved in research.
The CEBII will carry out its functions in a transparent, independent, pluralistic, competent, timely, high-quality manner, and free of political influence.
The functions of the Ethics Committee are the following:
- Guarantee the protection of the rights, safety, and well-being of individuals, communities, and non-human beings participating in research projects.
- Analyze and support discussions surrounding ethical and bioethical issues or dilemmas that arise in research.
- Guide the University's research policy regarding the ethical aspects of research.
- Review undergraduate and graduate research projects involving human subjects, non-human subjects, and the environment submitted for internal and external calls for proposals in order to grant their respective endorsement, with the purpose of issuing an opinion on compliance with ethical and bioethical requirements in accordance with the technical, methodological, and administrative aspects of current national and international regulations.
- Implement guidelines for ethical and bioethical review and monitoring of research projects that have received ethical approval at the beginning, during, and at the end of said projects.
- Communicate in writing to the interested parties, through the Chairman of the Committee, the results of their evaluations.
- Ensure the application of ethical and bioethical principles, guaranteeing compliance with national and international standards regarding the care of humans, animals, and the environment as subjects-objects participating in research.
- When conducting research in communities, it shall be the responsibility of the Committee to request for its consideration the potential impact that the research results may have on the community being researched and on the members participating in the research.
- Verify the community consultation procedures and the way in which the research results will be communicated to the community.
- Evaluate the potential risks to which the research subjects could be exposed and the measures that will be adopted to minimize them.
- Advocate that when research involving animals is conducted, they are kept in conditions of proper care and situations of mistreatment are avoided.
- Promote and foster education in research ethics involving human beings, non-humans, and the environment within the University.
- Design and update the manual of processes and procedures to guide the actions of the Research Ethics, Bioethics, and Integrity Committee – CEBII.
- Promote compliance with regulations and the operational processes and procedures of the Ethics, Bioethics, and Research Integrity Committee – CEBII.
- Verify compliance with the concepts, recommendations, and suggestions given in the review and ethical monitoring guidelines, generating the necessary institutional directives for researchers to correctly apply ethical and bioethical principles in the design of their research proposals and in their development.
- Raise awareness among researchers, teachers, and students about the importance of protecting the rights, safety, and well-being of human beings, animals, and other environmental elements, as well as of the institutions themselves that participate as subjects-objects of study in research.
- Continuously promote among researchers, professors, and students respect for human dignity, privacy, confidentiality, and the autonomy of research participants.
- It will issue its own regulations.
Committee Sessions
The Committee shall meet at least two (2) times in each academic semester, without prejudice to the convening of extraordinary sessions deemed appropriate by the Director of Research.
