Historical Overview of the Program

The creation of the Music program and the Zipaquirá extension was authorized in agreement 0027 of 1999 of the Superior Council of the University of Cundinamarca and, in accordance with decree 1403 of July 1993, its operation was reported to the MEN through the ICFES with registration of September of the year 2000 in the SNIES, obtaining the code 121442529003100.

The Music program was created in response to the need for professional music training options in the department of Cundinamarca, distinct from the traditional academic offerings in the city of Bogotá. It began by offering instruction in a few instruments of Central European tradition and gradually expanded to encompass all symphonic instruments, as well as piano, guitar, and opera singing.

Alongside this offering, the program has strengthened its coverage of instruments characteristic of other musical expressions, such as Colombian Andean music, llanera music, and universal genres like jazz, rock, and tropical music. This coverage, coupled with the hard work of the teachers and students, has led to increasing recognition for the program, reflected in its steadily growing demand.

In recent years, the program has strengthened its research culture and productivity thanks to the constant participation of professors and students in research groups and seedbeds where they develop different STI projects, which produce a large amount of products of new knowledge generation and social appropriation of knowledge.

The Music program has managed to position itself in the productive and academic sector of music, designing, as a result, different agreements with cultural entities at the municipal level and with other national and foreign higher education institutions; and enjoys important local, national and international recognition, thanks to the participation of teachers and students in different national and international academic and cultural events, in which they stand out for a high disciplinary and academic performance.

It is important to highlight that during its development, the formation of musical groups that have represented the University of Cundinamarca in important national and international musical and academic settings has been significantly strengthened, such as the Big Band, the Symphony Orchestra, and its traditional Colombian music groups, among others.
