High-quality accreditation increases prestige and facilitates academic mobility.
At UniEn Colombia, high-quality accreditation is a process through which the quality of a higher education institution and its academic programs are evaluated, with the objective of ensuring that they meet rigorous standards in the training process, research, university social interaction, and institutional management.
This process is carried out by accrediting bodies recognized by the Ministry of National Education, such as the National Accreditation Council. At the University of Cundinamarca, high academic quality has been a priority. Since 2017, UCundinamarca has been pursuing a path toward excellence, with the firm objective of obtaining institutional accreditation and accreditation for its programs at all its campuses and branches.

“This route began with a significant step: the accreditation of the first academic program, the Bachelor's Degree in Social Sciences. Since then, every achievement has been a stepping stone toward excellence. In 2021, the renewal of this program's accreditation marked a milestone on the path toward high educational quality at UCundinamarca.”, indicated Academic Vice-Rector Doctor Víctor Hugo Londoño Aguirre.
He also recalled that in 2022, three academic programs obtained high-quality accreditation: Electronic Engineering, Zootechnics at the Fusagasugá campus, and Music at the Zipaquirá campus. These achievements are a testament to the commitment and dedication of the entire university community.
In this way, UCundinamarca moved forward into the future. In 2023, attention focused on consolidating the achievements reached. The submission of applications to the National Accreditation Council for the assessment of initial conditions of two (2) campuses and twelve (12) academic programs reflects the constant desire for improvement. “Now in the year 2024, the University of Cundinamarca is preparing to face new challenges. The reception of visits for the assessment of initial conditions, the execution of improvement plans, and the submission of reports for accreditation purposes are the goals that drive us forward, having already outlined its accreditation route in the Institutional Development Plan (2024-2027)”, said.
High-quality accreditation implies an evaluation of various aspects of the university, such as its mission and vision, knowledge and learning managers, infrastructure, educational resources, academic programs, training and learning processes, research, and social interaction, among others. The goal is to verify that the institution meets high standards of quality.
The main difference between high-quality accreditation and other types of recognition or certification lies in its comprehensive approach and the evaluation of multiple aspects of the institution. While some recognitions may focus on specific aspects, such as the quality of an academic program or research, high-quality accreditation encompasses a broader and deeper evaluation of the institution as a whole.
Likewise, high-quality accreditation is a voluntary process in which the educational institution decides to undergo evaluation to demonstrate its commitment to excellence and continuous improvement. Obtaining this type of accreditation can signify public recognition of the institution's quality.
Among the benefits that the University of Cundinamarca would gain from obtaining high-quality accreditation are: the increased interest it would generate among students and their families when assessing the academic quality of a university and making decisions about their higher education; high-quality accreditation can be a determining factor in attracting talented students and increasing demand for the institution's academic programs; and internationalization: high-quality accreditation can facilitate the university's internationalization by increasing its visibility and reputation globally.
This can open opportunities to establish international agreements, attract foreign students and knowledge and learning managers, and participate in international research and cooperation projects. Furthermore, it fosters continuous improvement: High-quality accreditation promotes a culture of continuous improvement within the institution, as it involves self-evaluation of its performance and a commitment to standards of excellence. This can lead to a more dynamic, innovative, and quality-oriented institution in all its endeavors.
Regarding the processes to be followed to obtain high-quality accreditation in our country, the Academic Vice-Rector, Dr. Víctor Hugo Londoño Aguirre, indicated: Self-Assessment, preparation of the Self-Assessment Report, visit by a counselor to provide initial conditions for accreditation, Application for Accreditation, External Evaluation, External Evaluation Report, Institutional Response, CNA decision “In this part, the CNA analyzes all the documentation, including the self-assessment report, the external evaluation report, and the institution's response. Based on this analysis, the CNA makes a decision regarding accreditation. If granted, the accreditation may be for a specific period (usually between 6 and 10 years), depending on the level of compliance with quality standards.”, explained.
Following that comes the publication of results, which is basically the decision of the CNA where it communicates it to the institution and makes it public. In the event that accreditation is granted, the institution receives formal recognition of high quality and finally monitoring and continuous improvement.
Finally, during the high-quality accreditation process in Colombia, the National Accreditation Council (CNA) evaluates a series of criteria or standards that are fundamental to ensuring the educational quality of institutions, and the University of Cundinamarca is no exception to them. These criteria are important because they guarantee that institutions offer high-level education, focused on the comprehensive development of students and on contributing to the social and economic well-being of the country.
